This last weekend, former Ballenas Secondary student Alycia Butterworth, who graduated from the University of Idaho in 2015 with a degree in marketing and human resources, met the Olympic qualifying standard for the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at the Portland Track and Field Classic. Rio hopeful Butterworth crushed her previous personal best time in this event by 27 seconds. Thanks to her 9:41.26 performance on Sunday, she is in the mix for a spot on the Canadian Olympic squad.

“I had good improvements in the 800 m and 1,500 m this year and I knew I had done the training to run the standard [9:45], I just needed to execute in a race,” says Butterworth. “My coach and I knew there were going to be some good women in the mix and my plan was to stick with them.”

Alycia will be competing at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in July to try to lock down one of three spots available on the team.

We wish Alycia success in her quest to join fellow Ballenas alumnus, high jumper Mike Mason, on the Canadian Olympic team for the Rio Games.
