When I think of a jazz music experience, my mind goes to a sensory image involving a small dark room, comfortable overstuffed chairs, the smell of  cigarette smoke, amber liquids and a dimly lit stage.

Thankfully jazz music has moved beyond these stereotypical images from another time. Today, many of our secondary school students in Parksville and Qualicum are studying and performing jazz music at a very high level. Last week at my wife’s company Christmas party, a jazz trio from KSS played an amazing set that established a wonderful tone as the guests arrived…folks did a double-take when they heard the music first and then had to rationalize the technical proficiency, the creative genius and the youthfulness of the performers.
